I really, really enjoyed this book. I've read most of Ms. Haeger's books, and I've yet to be disappointed by anything she's written. Jane Seymour is by no means my favorite wife of Henry VIII, and calling her 'Little Mouse' is the perfect description of her. She just kind of fades into the background when compared to Henry's other 5 wives. It's not that I don't like her, I just didn't know much about her. She was Henry's wife for such a short time before her death.

Ms. Haeger has written a wonderfully vivid account of Jane's early years though. We meet her as a 9 year old little girl living at her family's estate, Wolf Hall. We learn how she fell in love with local boy William Dormer, but was destined to be kept apart from him...first due to a scheming servant, then by Will's ambitious mother, and finally by the love of a King.

Now, there are a few portrayals in this book that I don't agree with, and events that occurred that I believe happened differently, but what everyone needs to keep in mind is that this is Historical FICTION...the definition of the word FICTION being - "Invention or fabrication as opposed to fact".

Another reviewer mentioned that those unfamiliar with the Tudor saga may take what is in this book for fact. Well don't...in fact, don't do that with ANY Historical Fiction you read...ever. If you want facts, read an Encyclopedia or Non-Fiction book. This book (and other's like it) are purely for entertainment purposes only, and Diane Haegar has done an excellent job entertaining here.

Overall, I absolutely recommend this book, especially for Tudor lovers. It's an interesting look at a Queen that most Tudor fans know very little about. Will you agree with everything written here? Probably not, but don't over-think it. Just enjoy the story and get swept back in time to the glittering court of Henry VIII, and the story of one plain little girl who blew everyone away by becoming Queen Jane of England.

I Jane In the Court of Henry VIII Henry VIII Court Diane Haeger 9780451237897 Books Reviews

Such sadness......Truly a tragedy women lived as the belongings of men.to be used for family advancement is truly sad.to long an entire lifetime never fully experiencing love.this is a great read.
Awesome read! I love the Tudor times & this book met my expectations! Very enjoyable & not at all boring!
This book was great and written in a way that showed Jane Seymour to be a lot smarter and ambitious than she is usually portrayed and i quite enjoyed it. I dislike the way she is commonly portrayed as a flake that was nothing more than a pawn for her family...this shows she had some ambition for herself. Very enjoyable read.
Even if you're in the mood for a Harlequin Romance give this one a pass. I don't care how historically off this book was it wasn't even a good read. It actually started with a bit of promise, poor plain Jane was a sympathetic child but with every wrong done to her she grows into a more vindictive horrible excuse for a person, which would have made a great read if it had been the author's intent, but it wasn't.
The characters were mostly one dimentional; Jane=Good Anne=Bad Book=boring. I admit I've been a fan of Anne since I saw "Anne of a Thousand Days" as a teenager. How much better could this book have been if it had been about both wife #2 and wife #3 being pawns to their families ambitions? Boatloads of sympathy could be felt for Jane if she were shown to be as helpless as I'm sure she was just as Anne was before her. The most we get from Jane is a slight hiccup of regret for Anne's fate that is quickly snuffed out by remembering that Anne had tripped her up literally as a child ....what??? The whole Will Dormer sub plot was pretty lame as well. It was a rehash of Anne Boylen and Henry Percy dressed up for a different wife.
..just a thought, if we are going to place the blame on the wives instead of on Henry where it truly belongs then why throughout history has Anne has been vilified for causing a divorce and why hasn't Jane received the same or way worse treatment for causing an execution?

unfortunately I've already purchased Diane Haeger's Catherine Howard novel. I pray that it's better than this one!
Once again, Diane Haeger draws upon the medium of words to craft a hauntingly beautiful work of art, this time telling the story of Jane Seymour.
Love reading about this time period but book seems geared towards younger reader. Still a good read.
I could not put this book down! While I was hesitant at first that I would get engrossed in a book about Henry the VIII's most seemingly dull queen, this book gives a completely different perspective of the enigma who was Jane Seymour. I mean, wouldn't you rather read about the mesmerizing Anne Boleyn or scandalous little Katharine Howard for a more exciting novel? As an introverted person, I totally admired that the author basically portrayed her as someone who knew what perception they gave off to the public, and did it for both personal and political reasons to keep everyone guessing and fulfill her own destiny. I hated getting to the end of book knowing her fate, but am really happy there is a novel out there that shows people a different side of the people you wanted to play off as a pushover, a timid little mouse, and a queen that passively 'did her duty.' Putting up with her overly ambitious family, grasping brothers, an unrequited love interest, and the most ruthless king of all time gave her the ultimate challenge in life that we get to follow and see her prevail until her last breath. Well done!
