Go Figure edition by Dennis Young Children eBooks
"Go Figure" by Dennis Young is not really a story; it's more of a tool intended to help children learn shapes, exercise their imagination, and interact with their parents. I tried to like it, always keeping in mind the fact that I am not one of the target audience, but I just could not make myself like it. The drawings are definitely not done by anyone with artistic talent, but I suppose it's not necessary to have artistic talent to illustrate a children's shape-learning book. Each shape has (or is) a face; children and the parents are supposed to imagine a "back story" for each of the shapes, discussing what they eat, where they live, what they do for a living, etc. In that regard, it seems to me some of the figures are left open to a potentially bigotted interpretation, and thus are NOT what parents should be teaching their children. Some of the shapes are obviously supposed to be people; others are difficult to classify as anything. Facial expressions are sometimes difficult to read, as well. There are exactly 3 words of text in the entire "book"; "hope" is written on the roof of a building on the next to last page, and "the end" is written on the last page. What you get is 20 pages of abstract representations of general geometric shapes. I DEFINITELY would be upset if I paid $2.99 for this. I got it free, and I'm still disappointed.
I suppose some children might like this book. I would sincerely hope some parents would be willing and even happy to spend time with their children, going through this book. But it was just not possible for me to give it more than two stars. I wouldn't give it one star, because one star on Amazon means "I Hate It" and those are pretty strong words, even for this book. Two stars just means "I Don't Like It", and that is my position. I'm sorry, but the whole thing just left me asking, WHY?
I came away from "reading" this book with only one thing absolutely clear to me: the author, as a student, was one of those kids who was always doodling in his textbooks. I'm afraid I can't bring myself to recommend this one, but check it out for yourself and see what you think. It could be just what you are looking for.

Go Figure edition by Dennis Young Children eBooks Reviews
Comical stick like figures throughout the book, where small children can design their own stories. Colorful and geometrical this is one book that will indubitably gratify your child. -)
As an educator who works with students with autism and consistently collaborates with our art teacher, I see this book as a wonderful visual tool for our students to develop and guide them further into their own creativity.
I've known Dennis Young's music for many years, both as a member of Liquid Liquid and as a solo performer. But it's only recently that I've become acquainted with his art and I am equally impressed! Kids will love taking a trippy trip through Dennis's wild world. The colorful, surreal drawings reminded me a bit of another beloved musician/artist, Daniel Johnston. And I was happy to see bongos show up on one of the pages, it brought things full circle for me!
I found this book incredibly interesting. My niece, who is 9 loves it. It is so well written and extremely creative and engaging for children of all ages. I would recommend this book to children who are learning to read. I guarantee they will learn something new.
I find the concept of kids developing the story based on drawings only very appealing, but the ones presented in this book seem too crowded or complicated to me. I tried to "read"; it with my 4 years old boy and he was interested in the first 2 pages and that's it. The other drawings were too unfamiliar for him. Maybe for older kids
this might be because im ten but it was so BORING i mean ur going through pictures trying to think of something diffrent for each picture!!!!! I dont think they xan make a book more boring rhan this but if ur kids like it idc! What im trying to say dis that i hate the book but i like the ahthur. You may not think alot of kids are like this but im one of those kids who are adicted to reading.I mean its on my wishlist for crisnas to get a (Chapter)book every year.Like i litarlly have one of those notepads that have writeing on it that says "I would like a chaper book and...!At my school my teacher challanged me to wright a whole book and littarly publsh it at the end of rhe year and im ready so every body look out because theres a new auther in town! I got this book for my little nephew, and he and I had a blast with it! Dennis Young's artwork is simplistic and inviting for children, but the closer I examined the drawings, I noticed that more intricate details reveal themselves- these remind me of the late Keith Haring's works. My nephew's creativity was sparked immediately as we made up stories based on what was in the illustrations. My nephew announced tomorrow that he's going to think of names for some of the characters and even expressed an interest in making his own similar drawings. What an awesome way to inspire creativity in young minds! Perfect!
