Holy Crap makes spirituality simple…And possible in everyday life!

Dan Messinger turns life into life lessons, and not the kind you had to sit through in high school. These are everyday lessons that grab you by the collar and say, “Hey! This is your life talking! Listen up!” And do you?

Easy-to-read and down-to-earth, Holy Crap supports people of all faiths in using everyday hassles as opportunities for spiritual growth. “It’s hard as hell," says Dan Messinger. He struggles with it still, and that makes the stories he relates in Holy Crap that much more compelling – and humorous.
Holy Crap is down-to-earth and easy-to-read. Yet you may be inspired with profound insight if you dare.

Messinger is also a singer/songwriter and saxophonist who provides exploding, melodious songs from the heart, with positive and spiritual lyrics, in Wide Awake Songs from Holy Crap, an inspirational, classic-rock music CD.

Dan’s hunger for meaning led him to pursue his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Religion at Vassar and University of California at Santa Barbara respectively.

Holy Crap Spirituality within the Muck of Everyday Life is available on holycrapway.com, as well as on , Barnes & Noble and online retailers. Published by Lucky Bat Books, Holy Crap can be purchased in print and ebook formats.

It seems to me that the author is trying to be all things to all people--not quite that extreme, but he does try a little of many things. This is not just a book, very often we are invited to his website to add our own comments and have discussion. There seemed to be little activity on the website, and for me it would be way too time-consuming, and too personal in many instances. There is also music which I like, and guided meditations which I would never listen to as I like silent, simple meditations. Others may love that aspect best.
There are also quotes from several different religious belief systems and some mixing up of the same. Like tossing a salad, just throw it all in a bowl and stir it up. The author used some good quotes and there are many places where you will really stop and think things through. I did have trouble downloading the song, emailed and was sent help quickly. But then I also continued to recieve emails every 3-4 days that I didn't want, unsubcribed, and so far that was the end of it.
I appreciate that I was given a copy of this book to review. I really liked the three steps to "take responsibility for my feelings and effectively turn them around". Overall this felt like therapy sessions when I was really deep into it, reading and visiting the website.

Holy Crap Spirituality within the Muck of Everyday Life edition by Dan Messinger Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

What a great view into the 'real life' of spirituality. I would highly recommend this engaging commentary and creative content to anyone.
This is a wonderful book and I loved reading it, Dan has a way with words. His son has clearly impacted his soul.
The slings and arrows of daily life have too often kept me from enjoying life's pleasures. "Holy Crap" has given me tools and showed me how to use them to see through the fog of my life's issues and enjoy the sunshine that's right in front of me.
I found this book to be very helpful in my meditation practice. I've also been using the Holy Crap Cd's and like those very much. I am a beginning meditation student and compared to some other meditation books I've tried, I found Holy Crap to be a more easily accessible tool. Thumbs up!
I love this book because I can actually sit still and read multiple chapters, which feels simultaneously peaceful and hilarious, AND, at the much more common moments when obligations are crowding out my free time, I can breath easier by reading one paragraph or even a single sentence. Dan Messinger makes the book work this way because not only is he well-versed in a broad range of spiritual literature, but he applies all of that erudition at the very baseline of the mundane. The boring, gross, painful, or otherwise regrettable moments of Dan's life will crack you up because of his vivid descriptions and his familiar, down-to-earth lifestyle. But each bummer launches an encounter with life's most compelling paradox. I recommend this book whether you are bored or angry or if you could use an occasional realignment with your own life of the spirit.
I love this book! I've read Holy Crap twice now and the second time was much more rewarding than the first. On my first attempt I read it like I read most books -- intellectually, and trying to follow Dan's narrative and connect with the philosophies he was introducing. In the interest of full disclosure I'll say that Dan Messinger is an old friend and I read the book thinking of what I would write as a review. Anyway, I picked it up again last week, a good year or more after the first time I read it but this time I participated. I registered on the message board. I meditated on the questions Dan asked at the end of each chapter and posted my responses on the site. It made a world of difference. It became personal -- I had to draw from my own life experiences and put myself into the situations being discussed. Some really obvious truths revealed them self to me, like the value of friction in a relationship rather than avoiding conflict, and embracing uncertainty rather than clinging to what's known.

I found this book to be profound as well as being very honest and sincere. The music isn't bad, either!
I just started reading this book, and I already see it's a real "gem"! The author's personal and humorous writing style works beautifully with his obvious deep-insight into life, ...that writing-style is very engaging.
I also like the "interactive" aspect of "Holy Crap...", you're not just reading a story, ... you're also "asked questions" about yourself that require some introspection, ...and there are helpful suggestions for developing strategies / actions to apply in our everyday lives.
I highly recommend this book, ... (and feel certain that anyone who wants to "deepen the love" in their lives will enjoy it too).
