If I could give this book 10 stars out of 5 I would. I instantly grabbed me and kept me hooked. I was so engrossed I didn't hear the radio in the car or my fiancé talking to me. There were some spelling/grammar errors but the story and characters were so interesting I can honestly say that, in this book's case, I was 99.99% able to overlook them. I got done with the book & said to my fiancé' "Holy sh*t I did NOT see that coming! That was an effing awesome book!". I read a LOT and I'm pretty easy to entertain but this author? OMG! I cannot recommend this book enough! I picked up this book for free through Bookbub.com and I can tell you I am SO impressed with this author I would feel completely satisfied to have paid full price for this one. This guy has a HUGE career ahead of him and I can't wait to read more of his stuff. It's creepy and gross and mysterious with great characters and this would make a SPECTACULAR movie!Tags : CREATURES OF APPETITE (Emma Kane / Jacob Thorne Book 1) - Kindle edition by Todd Travis. CREATURES OF APPETITE Emma Kane / Jacob Thorne Book 1 edition by Todd Travis Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I got this book after reading the reviews, so I'd seen several people complain about the typos. Fortunately, I got it after the author had released a revised edition, which seems to have fixed all of those issues. Also, the swearing doesn't seem that excessive to me. They are cops, there is swearing, but I think it fit the attitudes and the environment.
For the actual story-it was definitely a good read. The chapters are very short which helps the story move along quickly. The first three chapters seem kind of disconnected (as they jump from one event to the next), but as soon as they got tied together, I was hooked. The author did a very good job with providing several twists along the way, kind of hinting at the ending, but with just enough details left out that you're still surprised when it actually happens.
Also, if you're a fan of being very surprised at the end of a crime book, you should definitely read this book. It's ending is brilliant and I there's no way that I could have seen it coming.
Many of our most popular books are written according to formula. Author Todd Travis pretty much knows all the formulas of serial killer novels, eccentric detective novels, and police procedurals in general, all of which are on display in his thriller, “Creatures of Appetite.” While some of the plot developments may be quite familiar for fans of these genres, Travis manages to craft his novel with considerable skill, resulting in a rather suspenseful read.
“Creatures of Appetite” involves yet another Holmes and Watson team, in this case, eccentric FBI consultant Jacob Thorne and his newly assigned partner, by-the-book agent Emma Kane. The Bureau has been stumped by a killer dubbed the Iceman, who is going around Nebraska kidnapping and chopping up little girls. Thorne and Kane arrive in Nebraska and immediately ruffle the feathers of the rather anal-retentive state police captain in charge of the investigation and exchange the obligatory putdowns, before Thorne, who enjoys playing games of chess against himself, provides a detailed profile of the killer. Actually, make that killers, since Thorne quickly figures out that some of the crimes are the work of a considerably less sophisticated copycat. Of course, having two killers allows the author to add a second manhunt in the book, with the obligatory suspense as the cops track down and pursue two different criminals.
If all this sounds familiar, it should, at least to anyone acquainted with this type of fiction. Author Travis is very familiar with all the conventions of the genre and puts many of them into his storyline. Some readers may enjoy plots that give them exactly what they expect, but I prefer books that either develop the characters in greater depth or twist the conventions around, neither of which happens here. Thorne and Kane, are very familiar character types in this sort of police thriller, at least to the extent the author reveals them in this book. A few plot strands in the book actually became annoying, especially the run-ins between Thorne and the police captain, who, as usually occurs in books like this, is entirely wrong nearly every time while insisting all the while that he doesn’t need Thorne’s help.
Still, while the author doesn’t break much new ground creatively in “Creatures of Appetite,” his execution of this familiar material is quite skillful. Simply put, most of the story works quite well. Both Thorne and Kane prove quite resourceful and very willing to get their hands dirty in the pursuit of the killers. The final showdowns between them and the two killers are quite suspenseful and well thought out. And when the author finally reveals the second killer’s motivation and methodology, it proves suitably complex, leading to a gripping cat-and-mouse game between Thorne and the killer over the last few chapters.
Reading “Creatures of Appetite” is like watching a familiar, well-made police procedural on television (which, actually, the book is very much like). There’s not much particularly new here, but what the author does provide is slick and well executed. “Creatures of Appetite” should satisfy the appetites of most thriller fans.
The story is mostly told from Emma Kane's POV but you also see into Jacob Thorne's head sometimes. Thorne reminded me very much of "House MD". He is brilliant, much more so than anyone around him and he has little/no tolerance for authority. Kane is a woman who has been suspected of skating by on looks alone so she feels she has to prove herself. Having said that she doesn't hesitate on calling out Thorne on his attitude. She also wants to learn from him as he is the best of the best. There are serial killers in this book that they are after and some murders are described but not in so much depth you are disgusted. There is also one intimate scene in the book but it isn't explicit. More like implied and that is fine with me.This was to me a very well written book and it had an excellent ending!
I am an avid horror/suspense reader and for the past few years, have been rather disappointed with many of the books I've read, until this one. This book had me hooked from the first paragraph and I was unable to put it down! The story is fantastic, the characters are very relatable, and the twists actually shocked me! Mr. Travis is fairly new to the scene, but he is quickly becoming a genre favorite, and I am looking forward to anything new that he writes. I would like to thank Mr. Travis for sharing his wonderful gift with us!
