Grim Shadows A Roaring Twenties Novel Jenn Bennett Books
Magic and mayhem go hand in hand in Grim Shadows. There’s no sophomore slump for the Roaring Twenties series – Jenn Bennett knows how to keep the thrills coming and Grim Shadows lives up to the promise of its smart, sensual predecessor, Bitter Spirits.Lowe Magnusson is a smooth-talking archaeologist with an easy smile and a penchant for spinning tales. Hadley Bacall is a curator trying to make a name for herself in a male-dominated field. She’s also got a curse hanging over her head and has to keep her emotions tightly bottled for fear of disaster. On the surface, the two are like night and day, but they just click. The banter between Lowe and Hadley – when balanced by the emotional revelations each makes – made them a truly captivating couple to read about. Both are supremely intelligent and are more than what most people see them to be; traits that come in handy as they become semi-reluctant allies on a quest to find the missing pieces of a supernatural artifact. Their action-packed treasure hunt through the streets of Prohibition-era San Francisco had me avidly turning the pages of Grim Shadows. Ms. Bennett has some wonderful twists and turns in store for readers (even the ones you can see coming are exciting to watch play out).
As she did with the first Roaring Twenties book, Ms. Bennett brings 1920s San Francisco to vivid life, then gives it her own unique spin by adding in the paranormal and placing events in less posh areas than those generally showcased in historical romance. I flat-out loved delving into Ms. Bennett’s world once again, though the mysteries uncovered in Grim Shadows are decidedly different from those in Bitter Spirits. Ms. Bennett has a way of writing that draws you into the story and doesn’t let go. I look forward to getting lost in Lowe and Hadley’s adventure-filled romance many, many times while I impatiently wait for the next Roaring Twenties book!

Grim Shadows A Roaring Twenties Novel Jenn Bennett Books Reviews
Good story and likable characters. Nice fast read; the hero was not cookie cutter and I was especially fond of him.
I loved the original setting for this book. 1920's San Francisco with a story that doesn't just nibble around prohibition, but jumps right into it, the book is well written and a lot of fun. The supernatural aspect doesn't overwhelm the story or the characters, but is central to the book. I'll read more from this author.
I thoroughly enjoyed this romp through historic 1920's San Francisco on the trail of ancient artifacts with incredible power. The hero is a lovable scoundrel who sees no reason to change his wicked ways ... until he meets this unusual, and very engaging heroine.
Both are wounded people struggling to find love, yet believing it can never happen for them. Their slow but hot romance kindles as they race a hidden villain.
Was a bit hesitant at first. I really enjoyed book 1 and didn't know if Jenn Bennett would be able to replicate the magic. She did even better! The beginning was a bit slow but then it became and urban treasure hunt story. There was more of a paranormal element in this than the previous book. The romance was still there and I really enjoyed the relationship between Hadley and Lowe.
Jenn Bennett writing easily transported me to 1920's San Francisco. Love the historical portion of these stories. Curious to see what the next installment will bring.
I really liked Grim Shadows. Lowe (another Magnusson brother) was such a charming rogue and such a fabulous liar. I really liked him, and I really liked him with the initially icy Hadley. Her transition is pretty wonderful too and their chemistry together is wonderful. I am still a great fan of the setting and time period for the series as well, 20's San Fran very cool.
I am so happy to see that there is still one book left in the series - the HEA for Lowe's sister Astrid (hope she and Bo can live up to the high bar set by her roguish brothers.)
I enjoyed this second story in the series as much as the first one. It does have paranormal happenings like the first but not the same type. I'm anxious to read what kind of paranormal hijinks will go on in the third book.
Lowe Magnussen is an archeologist with a knack for getting in trouble and a talent for talking his way out of it. When he meets museum curator Hadley Bacall to discuss her father's interest in his latest find, trouble finds them both. With enemies from both Lowe's past and Hadley's father's after them, this artifact may be more trouble than even Lowe can get out of.
The action picks up right from the beginning with Lowe and Hadley fighting off thugs and chasing down a train. They continue to be chased by some unique and interesting creatures throughout the book, but the heart of the story is really the treasure hunt. They have to solve a riddle, decipher a code and hunt down objects all over San Francisco. In Lowe's typical fast-talking fashion they pose as different characters at each stop, which is just as much fun for readers as it is for the normally straight-laced Hadley. The pair also have nearly instant chemistry but Hadley's hang-ups and Lowe's schemes threaten to keep them apart.
You don't need to read Bitter Spirits first to understand Grim Shadows, but if you did you'll be happy to see that Winter and Aida show up a few times in this one. The city of San Francisco is still a big part of the story with some new and interesting locations featured. The paranormal element is also similar, and though it's more prominent here, it's still not what defines the story. I really love the attention to the historical details in both books, especially the fashion. This time the stand out for me is Hadley's lingerie. I'm really enjoying this series and looking forward to Bo and Astrid's story in the next one.
