I thought if I read the entire series it might get better, but was sorely disappointed. So much more could have been developed from the original storyline. What a letdown!

daynight eBook Megan Thomason Reviews

Daynight is based on the intriguing premise that Earth has a "sister" world, Thera, where those that have had their lives cut short can go for a second chance at a longer life. Specially gifted individuals can go back and forth via portals between the two worlds (without having to die). Kira Donovan, is unknowingly gifted with this ability and as her tragic junior year of high school year ends (110 of her classmates, her boyfriend and best friend were all killed in a house explosion at an after party for the Winter Dance), she chooses to complete her final year as a recruit of the SCI - the Second Chance Institute. The Second Chance Institute is the corporation that makes possible the "second chance" at life for the deceased.

Blake, a classmate that also escaped the house explosion, signs on with SCI as well but he has a secret agenda behind his decision. Ethan, the son of a prominent family on Thera, attends college on Earth during the school year and interns with his father in the Theran government during summer break. The three main characters are united on Thera and an angsty love triangle develops.

Life on Thera is governed by strict rules with harsh consequences for non-compliance. It is also a physically, harsh environment with the outside temperatures reaching 150 degrees during the day. As an adaptation to the heat, the inhabitants live their lives and are awake during the cooler hours of darkness and sleep during the heat of the day.

The Second Chance inhabitants are unaware of their previous lives on Earth. They come to Thera the same age they were when they died with no memory of their past. When Kira realizes that her former boyfriend, best friend, and many of her former classmates are now on Thera as Second Chancers, it becomes a stressful struggle for her to maintain the pretense that they are meeting for the first time and have no history with each other.

The story is an adventure, a mystery, a romance and thriller all blended to create a highly enjoyable reading experience. The main characters are flawed, yet very likeable; the situation on Thera, tense; and the machinations behind the scenes on Thera, frightening and dangerous. All of which will keep the "pages" turning.
Unlike most dystopian novels, Megan Thomason’s Daynight fits several different premises together into a compellingly strange new world. First is an intriguing concept of “cleaving,” an unbreakable unity, replacing marriage, applied to any teens who allow their relationship to go too far. It certainly sounds like a convincing way to keep young adults in order, though the question of who defines “too far,” and who will choose who they cleave to when they reach eighteen makes it kind of scary. Add to this a world where disobedience is punishable by terrifying exile or by death. Then connect it to our own present world through strange portals, controlled by a powerful business corporation. Add Second Chancers to the mix – earth’s prematurely dead, who get a second chance at life. Stir and repeat. Sprinkle politics on top...

It’s a heady mix, and surprisingly it works, through some strong characters and the author’s strong writing. The plot may be a little unconvincing at times, but the male and female voices that tell the tale can carry it well. If Kira is occasionally blind to the logs in her own eye, well, she is a teen, and she does mature convincingly during the story. And if her different love interests keep a few too many secrets, well, the same thing applies.

A thickening plot ensues, but it keeps the reader turning pages very effectively, and this reader, at least, is eager to see the rest of the series.

Disclosure I first read Daynight in the collection, What Tomorrow May Bring, and was glad to be introduced to this author.
daynight is a novel that centers around three main characters Ethan, Blake, and Kira. Kira and Blake both sign on to become Recruits for the Second Chance Institute and are sent to Thera for a year. Kira is trying to escape a tragedy that left all of her friends and boyfried dead, and Blake is heading to Thera with an ulterior motive of revenge. Ethan is the son of a memeber of the government on Thera and is already a part of the SCI, whether he likes it or not. Blake's plans for revenge are hindered by his developing feelings for Kira, and Ethan wants to make Kira his Cleave - a partner for life after having sex. Kira is torn in the middle of her feelings, wanting to keep the peace but also wanting to escape the SCI after finding out what it's really all about.

My synopsis really does not do this novel justice. I cannot even go on enough about how much I loved this novel! The changing perspectives is something I really love, and since so many of the characters are having different experiences on Thera, it was really helpful for moving the story along. I also liked the developing relationship between all of the characters. Reading through the novel, I really can't decide if I like Blake or Ethan better!

I also really enjoyed the way that the author built Thera. The reader mostly gets to see Garden City, which is only one of many cities on Thera, a planet similar to Earth but with day and night reversed and more severe heat, but the detail is amazing. The language also changes because of the time difference (dinner in the morning, breakfast in the evening, and instead of Saturday it's Saturnnight). The author really did a great job making sure that characters who were familiar with the correct lingo (Blake and Ethan) didn't struggle, but Kira did because she was new to Thera.

Overall, I really can't say enough about this novel to express my love for it. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment! I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone.
